Surface Finish
Dirt, defects, oil and rust –these headaches for fabricators cost time and money to remove from sheet steel or plate. SCS eliminates them from the start for a superior finish.
SCS gives you a smooth, clean, matte surface that’s similar to cold rolled. It's the kind of surface needed for glossy paint coatings and defect-free welds. It reduces surface preparation and offers these other valuable advantages:
- Reduced paint prep
- Smoother paint finish
- Cleaner work environment
- Less rework, fewer rejects
- Faster laser/plasma cutting
"The SCS steel surface is so smooth that the paint finish is smoother. Since the switch to SCS, our rework expense has been virtually eliminated"
Please note that SCS will often show the 'stains' and blue edge typical of hot roll black. These are merely the natural surface colorations, not defects, and do not effect paint adherence or appearance at all.
These two samples originated from the same coil of hot rolled. The left sample is untreated, just as it came from the mill. The sample on the right was run through the SCS process. Next >
This close up view is of the the same two samples:
The untreated hot rolled black (HRB) material on the left
has its normal mill scale layer intact.
The SCS sample on the right shows the cleaner, more
uniform appearance after SCS Brushing has removed all
but a very thin layer of highly polished scale that remains
bonded to the base steel.

This short "Before - After" video follows the SCS Process performed on a sheet of ordinary hot band. The "Before" napkin wipe across the sheet shows the loose mill scale and grit typical of hot band. The "After" napkin wipe demonstrates just how clean the SCS Process leaves this same steel sheet.
